How to Create a Mac OS X Lion Bootable DVD

OS X Lion is distributed exclusively through the Mac App Store. While this allows you to get your hands on OS X Lion quickly, it does have some drawbacks.

Perhaps the most frequently mentioned issue is the lack of a bootable DVD, which would allow you to perform clean installs on your Mac, as well as have a bootable OS from which to run Disk Utility.

Apple has attempted to address the need to be able to run Disk Utility by including a recovery drive with OS X Lion. During the Lion installation process, a special recovery disk partition is created. It includes a stripped-down version of Lion that lets you boot your Mac and run a small number of utilities, including Disk Utility. It also lets you re-install Lion, if necessary. But if the drive the recovery partition is on goes bad, you're out of luck.

For this and many other reasons, I'm going to show you how to create a bootable version of the OS X Lion installer.

========================================================
INSTRUCTIONS

1.) Download the Lion installer from the App Store

2.)Move the Installer out of the Applications folder (e.g., to your Desktop)

3.) Right-click on the Installer and select "Show Package Contents"

4.) Within the package, go to the "SharedSupport" folder

5.) Copy the "InstallESD.dmg" file to your Desktop

6.) Launch Disk Utility

7.) Click "Burn" and select the "InstallESD.dmg" file you copied to your desktop

8.) Insert a blank DVD

9.) Burn that Lion goodness to your DVD

After that, you will have a Lion Installer DVD.
